One in the Same

Over the summer I visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion exhibit. The exhibition featured models of the twentieth century in haute couture and read-to-wear pieces who inspired their photographers and epitomized their era. Peggy Moffit modeled a topless swimsuit that created a clamor throughout the nation during the early 1960’s. Designer of the suit, Rudy Gernreich said, “I really rattled the world.” Despite the uproar that the fashion world felt the suit sold and the photograph remains an icon.

Images for the anticipated Victoria’s Secret catalog were posted recently. As always the line didn’t disappoint in both wearable swimwear and too sexy suits, but I couldn’t help but think of Peggy Moffit’s photograph when viewing several pieces in the collection. Though time and a few details separate the photographs, one can’t help but recognize the resemblance of the two suits. Inspiration?
